Geography
Geography at St. Augustine's
Geography : is the study of places and the relationships between people and their environments.
Intent
At St. Augustine’s we aim to inspire a sense of curiosity and understanding about our local area, Britain, the world, and its people. Geography provides children with the opportunity to learn about the world we live in and appreciate the world on both a local and a global scale as they explore human and physical geography. By looking at and comparing the physical, human, economic and environmental issues and features affecting each area of the world, children can begin to understand how the choices they make have an impact on others around them. We aim to make meaningful links between geography and other subjects to ensure a cross curricular approach to learning. Children will also have the opportunity observe and collect data about people, cultures, and natural environments through fieldwork, to deepen their understanding of the world we live in. We aim to make meaningful links between geography and other subjects to ensure a cross curricular approach to learning.
Implementation
EYFS -
Children will learn about features of their immediate environment. They will know that simple symbols are used to identify features on a map. EYFS children will meet and learn about people who help us in the community. They will know that people in other countries may speak different languages and learn about similarities and differences between countries and environments with a focus on Africa in the summer term
KS1 and KS2
Children use a range of skills including:
- Inquiry skills
- Analytical skills
- Communication and teamwork skills
- Fieldwork skills
We will aim to ensure that learning is not just limited to inside the classroom and utilise opportunities, in each year group for outdoor learning, where children learn from first hand experiences, including through trips and visits. Also, through the integration of more fieldwork-based lessons they will develop subject knowledge and contextualise learning around our local environment.
Impact
Children will extend their personal horizons through a greater appreciation and understanding of the world and the people around them.
Children will understand the need for sustainable relationships between people and their environment, developing a deeper understanding of how we need to take care of our world.
Through more engaging, memorable and practical lessons, children will develop their subject knowledge through contextualised learning.
